Burgas

Country: Bulgaria

"The sea gathers everything away" - Yoan Ekzarh Burgas is the largest city in Southeastern Bulgaria and the fourth largest in the country. Its key geostrategic location determines its rapid development over the last 20-30 years. The immediate proximity to the sea and the presence of unique natural landmarks make it a tourist destination as well as a highly developed industrial center, with some of the productions here being the only and decisive for the country. By economic capacity Burgas Municipality ranks second among the Bulgarian municipalities. Here is the largest cargo port. The key location, the better conditions for recreation and the natural resources attract new and new investors annually, and the increasing number of the population is a quality indicator of the town's prosperity.

History

Burgas is also a city of centuries-old history, too. The earliest evidence of life dates back to the early Iron Age. The name of the city (which was then called Poros or Foros) appeared for the first time in a verse of a Byzantine poet, and in 1733 the city was first mapped. Many civilizations have crossed its territory - some have left debris and devastation behind them, while others have left bloom and prosperity. All traces of the past that have been discovered are displayed at the Regional Museum of History and form the unique image of the city and the region.

Geography

The total area of Burgas Municipality is 482,000 km2, making it the municipality with the largest area in Bulgaria. The climate is moderate continental with strong Black Sea influence. The sunny days in the year are over 150 and the average summer temperature reaches 27.5°C. According to the National Statistical Institute, the total population of Burgas as of December 2017 was 314,036 people. The city has numerous merits and can boast with quite a few amenities - sufficient green areas commensurate to the construction of new residential and office buildings, extremely convenient road infrastructure, efficient public transport and numerous historical, cultural and natural landmarks that should not be missed.

Infrastructure

The Sea Garden is a work of landscaping art and a key place for recreation and entertainment, whereas the long beach strips covered with golden silk sand are just as good as the Mediterranean ones. Burgas Mineral Baths (Aqua Kalide Complex), located 15 km outside the city, is one of the oldest balneological centers and date back to the Thracians period. Atanasovsko Lake is a nature reserve and has been included in the Ramsar list since the end of the last century. In 1989, the Poda area became a protected area for the purpose of conservation of the natural habitats of a large number of birds and breeding colonies, and in 2005, Vaya protected Vaya was also designated as an important ornithological site. All of these natural "treasures" contribute to the uniqueness of the region, which is a perfectly balanced combination of natural treasures and modern urban solutions.

Development

At the beginning of this year, Burgas won the "Best City to Live in Bulgaria" award for 2017 and has managed to win the same award two more times over the years - in 2010 and 2012. Local residents are warm and hospitable and the sea view brings unique romance to the otherwise calm and magical Bourgas atmosphere. The free spirit and artistic energy flow from every corner and this is the only place where you can enjoy the breathtaking International Folklore Festival and the unique National Exhibition for Flowers with International Participation "FLORA". The touch of the sea, the well-known scent of salt and algae, the silence of the small and clean streets, the variety of festivals and interesting events, the smell of freshly roasted fish and the dynamic, yet lazy nature of everyday life, will certainly take your heart from the very first day. This is BURGAS - different, sympathetic, a little bit mystical and very charismatic. We welcome you here! We guarantee that you will fall in love!
