To the north, the Forum borders with Odeon and a motor subway (M. Louisa Blvd.) passes between them, the construction of which in the 1980s breaks the forum into two parts and destroys part of it.
At this place in the ancient city were held meetings, debates and holidays. There have been discussions of state affairs in the Roman Empire. The forum was a commercial, administrative and religious center.
As it is known, Plovdiv had many names - Puldin, Eumolpia, Trimontium, but the most memorable name is Philipopolis, known from the time of the Roman Empire. That is why the forum is often called the Philippopolis Complex.
The Roman Forum impresses with its size. Spread over 20 hectares of land. According to historians, his construction began in the 1 st century AD during the time of Emperor Vespasian.
In the northern part of the Forum is the Odeon. It was about 300 seats and served as the headquarters of the city council of Philippopolis.
The current location of the forum is located in the center of Plovdiv - close to "General Gurko" Street and the main pedestrian street "Knyaz Alexander Batenberg".
Today, the remains of the Roman Forum are part of the pedestrianized central area. Ancient streets with a junction, remains of buildings and colonnades are exposed so visitors can go down and explore them. The place is always lively because of the enormous interest of foreign tourists.
