The Velyanov House is emblematic of the grandeur, economic prosperity and spiritual aspiration of the people of Banska Bystrica during the Bulgarian Renaissance. It is an illustration of the elegance and comfort of our ancestors’ everyday life, their unadulterated sense of beauty, their devotion to the home and family values. With its unique frescoes and woodcarvings, the house has no analogue in Bulgarian Renaissance art. The Velyanov House has been declared an immovable cultural asset of national importance. Built in the 18th century, it is one of the old fortress houses with thick stone walls, underground hiding places, internal and external battlements, and small windows with iron bars.
