Description

Island of St. Anastasia is the most romantic place in the Bourgas Bay. It is located 6.5 km southeast of Burgas, between Cape Chukalya and Cape Atia. Its area is about 9 acres, built of volcanic rocks, in which the sea waves have shaped interesting rock formations - the Mushroom, the Dragon, the Sun Gate, the Fossilised Pirate Ship. The earliest human presence dates back to the late antiquity, and the first mapping of the island was made at the end of the 17th century by Dutch cartographer Nicholaes Witsen.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the church cloister of the island was turned into a prison that turned out to be something like the Bulgarian Alcatraz. In 1925 the organizers of the most bloody terrorist attack in the country at that time - the attack against the church "St. Nedelya" - are exiled there. Between 1945 and 1990 the island bears the name "Bolshevik". In the more distant past, the island was attacked by pirates who thought there was buried gold treasure there. The monks who inhabited the only monastery on the island closed in the church and prayed to the Saint Anastasia to save them from the fierce attack. She heard their prayers and sent a monstrous storm that "swallowed" the pirate ship and sent it to the depths of the sea. Its remains are fossilized near the shore and can be seen today.

Since 2001, Saint Anastasia has the status of a cultural and historical landmark. Today, visitors can just walk on the island, visit the museum, light a candle in the monastery church “Assumption”, built in 15-16th century, spend the night in a monastery cell from the Middle Ages, or taste authentic dishes from the region prepared on old, tried recipes.
