Description
The old town of Bansko is of particular importance for the history and cultural identity of our country. Filled with magnificent century-old fortresses reminding of the majesty of a long past, it has preserved its authentic appearance and testifies to the welfare and social upsurge of the region. During the Renaissance, the Old Town of Bansko is one of the most developed and socially active centers, where all the shops and events were concentrated - sawmills, groceries, leather workshops, mills, textile workshops and small craft workshops. From here, different wares were sent to the Aegean Sea, to the western part of the Balkan Peninsula, and part of the production even reached England. The inhabitants of Bansko mainly exported timber, clothes, carpentry. Many of them have opened their own offices abroad and their business have expanded in a hilarious way.
The romantic look the old town of Bansko gets from the unique ancient houses, preserved in typical Bansko architecture. They differ from the typical Bulgarian mountain houses on their complex internal distribution, the presence of large guest rooms, secret corridors and hiding places and, above all, their massive stone construction. The mesilnik (the room for bread making and baking), the cellar and the barn for the domestic animals were on the first floor, and the second - the living room and bedrooms. The living area was always located to the east, and there were doors and antechamber between the rooms that held heat during the cold months. Each house had a secret hiding place and an underground tunnel that led to the church or to the neighbors. These underground corridors were called “komshulutsi” and allowed people to escape from their enemies in the neighboring yard. Many of the houses have rich and unique decorations - beautiful carvings and impressive murals that turn them into works of art and show people’s highly developed sense of beauty and architectural harmony.
In the Old Town is also the “pearl” of Bansko, namely the “Holy Trinity” church. In the period before the Liberation, it is the largest Christian sanctuary in the Balkans, and this remains so until the building of the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral monument, which is located in the capital.
