The Roman Imperial Baths in the Hisarya SPA resort are an impressive archaeological site that reveals the importance of mineral springs since the time of the Thracians and their development during the Roman Empire.
Sensational archaeological discoveries in recent years have distinguished the aforementioned 2nd century archaeological thermal complex as the only one in Bulgaria and the Balkans in which the path of mineral water from the catchments, along the original water pipes to the healing pools can still be traced today.
In 2023, the archaeological team, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mitko Madzharov, made a sensational discovery during rescue excavations of the baths. A fully preserved marble slab with an inscription dating back to around 152 AD was found. This is the third epigraphic monument discovered at the site in the same year.
The text of the inscription is dedicated to the imperial family of Emperor Antoninus Pius. It mentions the names of his two adopted sons, Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. Marcus Aurelius had the title of Caesar.
He was a philosopher and Roman emperor for 19 years, ruling from 161 to 180!
– The inscription is a dedication made by Titus Flavius Patroclus and his wife Aelia Bendida – a Thracian by origin, who were high priests of the imperial cult and donated the marble lining of the bath with their own funds for the health and well-being of the imperial family. Here is more from the inscription! The governor of the province of Thrace is Gallonius Fronton, and the financial procurator / treasurer of the province of Thrace / is Volusius Severus. The name of Gallonius Fronton is very important, as it is known that he was the governor of the province of Thrace in 152 - 153. This shows that the bath was ready in its finished form precisely during this period.
The slab was discovered in a room that was undoubtedly a cult temple – a sanctuary of nymphs. This shows that there was a strong imperial presence around the mineral springs, both spiritually and physically. This inscription corresponds to a fragment of an inscription found by Dimitar Tsonchev, which originates from Hisarya, and which states that in 135-136, during the time of the then governor of the province of Thrace – Cavarii Fronton, the settlement around the mineral springs was declared an imperial possession. There is no doubt that the beginning of the construction of the Roman bath, which was already completed in 152-153, should be sought around this date.
These finds emphasize the importance of the mineral springs in the region, which were used by the Thracians and led to the flourishing of Diocletianopolis as a balneological and cultural center in the Roman Empire.
