Stara Zagora is a real poetic phenomenon. There is no such city either in Bulgarian or European literary history. In a period shorter than a century, more than 80 famous names were born or worked here, which defines our city as the "City of Poets" - with this spiritual nickname, Stara Zagora has been distinguished in Bulgarian literary and cultural life since 1919. for two decades - from 1894 to 1913, the high literary creativity of Bulgaria has accepted into its elite more than twenty natives of Staro Zagora, whose works are included in the golden fund of our national classics. At the beginning of the 20th century and especially around the First World War, authors such as Kiril Hristov, Georgi Iliev, Dimitar Podvrazachov, Georgi Raichev, Nikolay Liliev, Ivan Hadzhihristov, Geo Milev, Ivan Mirchev appeared, and in the decades between the two world wars and more their young followers - Ami Bakalov, Magda Petkanova, Ofelia Kasabova, Hristo Ognyanov, Veselin Hanchev...
These modern artists - the majority of whom are representatives of late European symbolism, impressionism, psychological realism and avant-garde expressionism - largely define the characteristic face of Bulgarian national literature, but weave their specific spirit into the manifestations of European literature itself.
With justifiable pride, on March 31, 1961, the inheritors of our priceless literary wealth opened a museum exhibition, which they lovingly call home - "Literary Stara Zagora" House. In just a few years, exhibits and archives have been collected - originals, manuscripts, notebooks, photographs and documents, books, personal belongings and unique objects. Many works of art have been added to the rich collection - paintings, graphics, sculptures. "Literary Stara Zagora" is established as a real spiritual center!
Unfortunately, in the spring of 1991, the museum was left without a home, and the unique poetic spirit of the city sought its dream far away over the years.
On October 25, 2019, a cherished dream came true - Literary Stara Zagora Museum was reborn! The spiritual guardians of our city have found their HOME again! The literary glory of Stara Zagora has not dimmed, the memory is preserved in the future! Today, thinking about the "Literary Stara Zagora" Museum means thinking about and honoring what was done by our literary ancestors - builders of our national culture!
Literary Stara Zagora Museum awaits you!
