Dechko Uzunov House Museum

Built after the artist's sketches of his childhood home

Academician Dechko Uzunov was born in Kazanlak on February 22, 1899. At the age of 35, he became a professor of fine and decorative arts at the Academy of Arts in Sofia, and in 1945 he was elected rector of the institution. Over the years, his work established him as one of the most significant names in Bulgarian art, and his rich artistic legacy is part of the collections of many state museum institutions. In 1976, he was elected president of the International Association of Plastic Arts AIAP under UNESCO, and two years later, he was elected an academician of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Dechko Uzunov died in his studio in Sofia on April 26, 1986.

The native house of Academician Dechko Uzunov has been restored based on the artist’s sketches by the Municipality of Kazanlak during his lifetime, with its location being changed. The house museum was opened to visitors only in 1987. Fulfilling the will of the creator, his wife Olga Uzunova donated 93 of his works to the gallery, some of which are arranged as a permanent exhibition. It is located in the four rooms of the house. Displayed are his paintings from various creative periods, as well as 4 works by Dechko Uzunov, donated by the artist’s nephews – Atanas and Hristo Neykovi.
